Paintless Shapes: In this series, the boundary between photography and painting is further explored. The glass plate in the foreground is provided with oil paint during the shoot, but the background is also hand painted. The model becomes part of the so-called 3-dimensional painting, which together with the studio lighting becomes a whole.

Sonja de Ridder (1975) studied from 1993 at the Academy of Arts (Arnhem) and from 2006 the Academy of Photography (Amsterdam). Her series ‘Painted Photography’ is her search for the borders of those two disciplines: painting and photography. The handwriting of the brush versus the anonymity of digital photography, the slowness of oilpaint versus the speed of the camera. With painting a glasswall with oilpaint, during posing of a model behind that glass, she is creating a bridge between those two disciplines.
