In her ongoing photography series ‘DOMESTIC’, Der Kinderen aims to visualise the visceral sense of being confined in an abusive relationship, marked by imminent menace and looming violence and infused with power and impotence. Due to the Covid-related lock-downs and constraints, domestic abuse has not only received more attention, but has unfortunately sky-rocketed in scale and intensity.
“How can we disconnect from a close person who harms us. When a no is not accepted as a no. For many victims of sexual assault, and/or domestic violence it is difficult to let go of the other and if they have managed to escape this violence, they still remain connected to the other in a certain sense through anger and trauma.”
Her body of work often-times mirrors global issues that rouse her on an emotional and intuitive level. Through the indirect, visual cues that she employs, Der Kinderen strives to provoke the innate questioning curiosity of the viewer to contemplate her imagery, teasing and infusing them with an imaginary touch. She limits herself to using natural light – without digital manipulation – and often-times herself as a model.
Marloes der Kinderen (born 1957, Eindhoven), studied Fine Art at the Royal Academy for Fine Art in ‘s Hertogenbosch. She was running in her early twenties a Modern Art gallery in Eindhoven. She completed her education as fine art teacher at TeHaTex in Tilburg and worked in the eighties at two high schools.
Der Kinderen established an itinerary art school, Artedu, in the nineties on different locations in France, Belgium and the Netherlands in which she attracted both leading artists and teachers such as Rob Nypels, Bert Verhoeff, Marc Mildner and many others. She organised workshops on drawing, painting, photography, music, philosophy and writing courses.
As part of Artedu, Der Kinderen developed an art-training program entitled CREAM (Creative Active Management Development). CREAM combines rightbrain drawing and management strategies for entrepreneurs.
In 1998 she initiated a Maison d’Hôtes ‘La Grande Maison’ in Chanteuges (Auvergne, France). Chanteuges has become a permanent centre for Artedu, and also houses a atelier where Der Kinderen has finally time to return to her own creative work: painting, collage and photography.
Der Kinderen works in the limited settings of her historical house and the environs in the Auvergne in France, and on the island Marken near Amsterdam where she lives.
