Hapé Smeele (1962) is self-taught and has worked as a photographer since 1986. The first years mainly as a portrait and documentary photographer. For this purpose he traveled extensively to Latin America, but also worked on a 25-year project in the Netherlands on the theme of ‘quality of life’. Since 2002 he has mainly focused on landscape photography in the broadest sense of the word. He has published five photo books, a number of which have won awards. His work has been exhibited and published at home and abroad.

About ‘Living in symbiosis’

 Since 2017 I have been working on the series ‘Life in symbiosis’. A series about how we are surrounded by trees every day. With these images I want to make the unseen visible. I want to make the eye and heart sensitive to the deeper layers of nature. I do this through a poetic approach, which has no hard answers, but invites you to see differently. For me it is not about explaining, but about experiencing. (Hapé Smeele)

 Artist statement

‘Good photography is a journey of discovery for the maker and the viewer. I photograph out of curiosity. The invisible opens up through the visible. Slowly.’

Hapé Smeele (1962) is autodidact en werkt sinds 1986 als fotograaf. De eerste jaren vooral als portret- en documentair-fotograaf. Hiervoor reisde hij veel naar Latijns-Amerika, maar werkte ook aan een 25-jarig project in Nederland over het thema ‘kwaliteit van leven’. Sinds 2002 richt hij zich vooral op landschapsfotografie in de ruime zin van het woord. Van zijn hand verschenen vijf fotoboeken, waarvan een aantal bekroond werd. Zijn werk werd in binnen- en buitenland geëxposeerd en gepubliceerd.

Over ‘Leven in symbiose’

Sinds 2017 werk ik aan de serie ‘Leven in symbiose’. Een serie over hoe wij elke dag weer omringd zijn door bomen. Met deze beelden wil ik het ongeziene zichtbaar maken. Het oog en het hart wil ik gevoelig maken voor de diepere lagen van de natuur. Dat doe ik door een poëtische benadering, die geen harde antwoorden kent, maar uitnodigt om anders te zien. Het gaat mij niet om verklaren, maar om ervaren. (Hapé Smeele)

‘Goede fotografie is een ontdekkingsreis voor de maker en de aanschouwer. Ik fotografeer vanuit nieuwsgierigheid. Via het zichtbare opent zich het onzichtbare. Langzaamaan.’
