His work is characterized as illustrative, narrative photography, with a carefully chosen image composition. In 2000, he won the Silver Camera for the first time with a photo of oil pollution on the French coast by a sunken tanker. Five more nominations would follow later, and a public award nomination in 2018 with an image of the record low water in the Dutch rivers… A report about the commemoration of 20 years of mass murder in Srebrenica was nominated for the FEP European Photographer of the Year, category reportage.

Reports, such as in Spain (oil disaster in Galicia, solar energy in Andalucia, Romeria del Rocio), Calais (migrants in ‘the Jungle’), Srebrenica (Dutchbat and ICMP Tuzla) and Italy (garbage problems in Naples), have been published via photo pages in newspapers or travel magazines. His first photo book from 1984 was the result of a social report about a working-class neighborhood in his hometown Nijmegen. This series was later republished in the bookazine ‘Hollandse Beelden’, as well as a number of color slides of his parents from the fifties that he restored. Four more photo books were published. Franssen’s roots lie in the river area of the Netherlands, the land of the Maas and Waal. That is the subject of his latest book ‘Panorama Rivierenland’.
