Bart Nieuwenhuis (1949-2017) studied at the Rietveld Academy from 1964 with Jaap d’Oliveira. He graduated cum laude in 1969. He worked all his life as a freelance photographer, the first 15 years from a studio in Amsterdam, and later 25 years in a converted church in Ouderkerk aan den Amstel. At first he mainly worked for illustrated magazines in the Netherlands and abroad, and later also for advertising agencies, design studios, companies and sponsored magazines. Was later affiliated with Reklamewinkel Bart & Hans as art director, and started its own online photo gallery Bigpixture in 2008. For many years he was a board member of World Press Photo (1987-2006), PANL (1993-1994) and the Kees Scherer Photo Archive Foundation.
