Wendelien Daan (1965, Eindhoven) studied fashion design at ARTEZ, Academy of the Arts, in Arnhem (graduated 1988), and started her photography career by colabs with designers like Viktor & Rolf. Publications in international magazines Selfservice and Vmagazine and others.
Since then she has been published in international issues of Harpers Bazaar, Vogue, L’Officiel, Elle, Glamour, as well as in more independent magazines like Oyster, The Face , i-D, Dutch.
Models she worked with include Karen Elson, Doutzen Kroes, Kim Peers, Lara Stone, Imaan Hammam, Malgosia Bela and Alek Wek.
The work of Wendelien Daan takes you into a world in which people and everyday objects can sometimes take on a peculiar form. (Freud wrote about this ‘estrangement’ phenomenon in his essay on ‘Unheimlichkeit,’ or ‘uncanny’). A detachment can be felt,
which at once captivates and makes one feel uneasy. The women in her photographs are often abstract and surreal. They seem to be continuously trying to withdraw from our world. They do not really represent a certain person, but rather the rendering of a feeling. This feeling is perhaps even reinforced by a certain kind of imperfection.
It is the combination of all these elements, the love of storytelling, the quest for scope for the imagination and the absurd in combination with a clear visual language – recognised internationally as Dutch – that makes the work of Wendelien Daan so personal.
Wendelien Daan has build a very large archive of iconic images which mostly have been published internationally in major fashion magazines and newspapers, during the last 20 years.
