Maria Austria (1915-1975), born in Karlovy Vary (now the Czech Republic), took a professional training in photography in Vienna. In 1937 the Jewish Austria fled to the rising Nazism to Amsterdam. After the liberation she founded together with Aart Klein, Wim Zilver Rupe and her later husband Henk Jonker photo agency Particam. Austria photographed, among other things, the reconstruction, the flood and the Secret Annex, but became known for its photography of the performing arts in the Netherlands. In 1956 Silver Rupe and Klein stepped out of Particam. In 1963 Austria, now separated from Jonker, continued alone. With the help of assistants including Vincent Mentzel, Jaap Pieper and Bob van Dantzig.
Austria captured the origins and blossoming of the Holland Festival, many opera and ballet productions, famous guest conductors and soloists. Later she also became the house photographer of the avant-garde Mickery Theater.
