    Herman Wouters studied History of Art at VU University in Amsterdam, and painting/graphic art at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam. His photographs of mostly urban still lifes and landscapes, which balance on the edge between art and report, are often edited in small editions of self published photobooks and zines.

    Wouters works as a Dutch based freelance documentary photographer for The New York Times, on assignment by the Travel and Foreign and art en leisure desks on features in the Netherlands and on travel stories. He also was a photojournalist for the Dutch national daily newspaper Trouw and national weekly magazine  HP/DeTijd. Before that, he worked a few years as an ad hoc photo editor for the newspaper de Volkskrant.

    Herman Wouters won several prizes in the Dutch Photojournalist contest, De Zilveren Camera and three nominations in The Photo Book Now Contest 2011, finalist at Kyoto Hariban Award 2017. He is represented by photo agency Hollandse Hoogte, teacher documentary photography Fotoacademie Amsterdam and corporate photographer for Schiphol Airport (Amsterdam).
