Guda Koster (1957) is a visual artist. She makes installations, sculptures, performances and photos in which clothing plays an important role. Clothing not only has a function, but also conveys a message. Clothing can be seen as a form of visual art that expresses the way we see ourselves and our relationship to the world around us. She treats the body as a sculptural base material, which is always impersonal and the face remains hidden. The human face is so important that it distracts you from other things, such as the shape of the clothes, the patterns or the composition. If you cannot see the face, the human figure is dehumanized into a sculpture and the viewer’s attention can remain focused on patterns, fabrics and general atmospheres.

Guda Koster lives and works in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. In the summer she usually work in Berlin for a few months. The environment is not important as she usually works in a studio.

She doesn’t consider herself a photographer. She makes “living” sculptures and the photo is the result of the performance. First a photo was taken as documentation, but it became more than just a registration, it became the final work.

In her youth Guda Koster was impressed by the art of Elsworth Kelly, Barnett Newman, Rothko she saw in the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. And abstract art still influences her work. Since 2000 she teaches sculpture  at Nieuwe Academie in Utrecht.
