Boudewijn Neuteboom (1941) experienced his breakthrough as a photographer in the 1960s. He was known for his innovative and pioneering style over a wide range of subjects including: fashion, cosmetics, culinary, stills and illustrative. From 1967 onwards he was able to apply his style, in part, thanks to his collaboration with trend-setting monthly magazine Avenue. Neuteboom shot a diverse portfolio of commercial assignments both domestically and abroad, his recognizable work is always highly saturated with his personal vision. He usually works without a conscious strategy, relying heavily on his intuition.
Boudewijn Neuteboom, born in Bandung, Indonesia, repatriated with his family to the Netherlands in 1953. He studied photography and film at St. Joost Academy in Breda where he graduates cum laude in 1964 and receives the honorary St. Joost Medal from the city of Breda. After he worked in Antwerp (Belgium) with photographer Joop der Weduwen, he settled down in Amsterdam where he started his own studio in 1967. He focuses on photographing the latest fashion and culinary trends for the monthly Avenue and other magazines including Cosmopolitan, Man and Margriet. Subsequently, he shot advertisement photographs for Heineken, Amstel Bier, Citroën, Volkswagen, BMW and Philips.
In 1979 he received the Golden Camera Award from the ADCN (Art Directors Club Netherlands) for the advertisement campaign for the whisky-brand VAT 69. A year later he would receive the Joop Alblas lifetime achievement award. In the consecutive years, Neuteboom received several other awards for various advertising campaigns. From 1985 he takes up directing advertisements, which he eventually grows into his own production company.
In 1993, Neuteboom is the subject of a major retrospective exhibition in the Grote Kerk in Naarden during the local photography festival. As a result, national newspaper Trouw names him most influential innovator of fashion photography in the 1960s. Between 1999 and 2003 he served as chairman of the PANL (Photographers Association of The Netherlands – now DuPho).
He ended his commercial career in 2005 and has been engaged in free work to this day.
