Kees Metselaar (1955) is a farmer’s son from North Holland who went to study chemistry in Amsterdam in the early 1970s. He neatly finished his studies in 1980 with a major in microbiology, but his scientific career ended there.

He was more into traveling far, not something you grew up with on a farm in those days.

During his civil service at the NGO Novib, he realized that he could combine photography and travel and earn money with it. Several magazines covering foreign subjects followed and in the mid-eighties he joined the new Dutch photo agency Hollandse Hoogte.

He made the first major foreign report in 1985 in the Sudan during the drought and refugee crisis in Ethiopia and surrounding countries. The following year, he photographed the fall of dictator Ferdinand Marcos in the Philippines. This was followed by reports about the Soviet war in Afghanistan.

In the late 1980s, he decided to establish his base in Asia. At the end of 1989 he moved to Hong Kong, then British.

From that former colony he still photographed a lot in the Philippines, but now also in the rest of Southeast Asia (Indonesia, Thailand and Laos) and on the Chinese mainland, where economic growth increased enormously.

In 1991, he was in Bangladesh when a disastrous cyclone swept across the coast, killing more than 100.000 people. His photos were then sold all over the world by the French photo agency Sygma.

In the late 1990s, he was in Indonesia at the end of President Suharto’s regime during the bloody riots in Jakarta.

Much of his work has been featured in various exhibitions in Hong Kong. In 2007 about the disappearance of traditional life from the old center of Hong Kong island. A few years later on how it looks like when a supertanker is being refurbished in a dry dock over the border in China. In 2013 a successful series about the Blue Bosphorus in Istanbul in Turkey.

In 2002 he was also one of the participating photographers in the prestigious ‘Brandhaarden’ (‘Conflict Zones’) exhibition of the Nederlands Fotomuseum in Rotterdam. His contribution was images of the war in Afghanistan in the 1980s.

From 2009 to 2019 he was a lecturer at the Journalism and Media Studies Center of the University of Hong Kong. In 2021 he returned to the Netherlands for good.

Kees Metselaar (1955) is een boerenzoon uit Noord-Holland die begin jaren zeventig in Amsterdam scheikunde ging studeren. Hij maakte zijn studie netjes af in 1980 met hoofdvak microbiologie, maar daar stopte zijn wetenschappelijke carrière.

Hij hield meer van verre reizen maken, niet iets waar je in die tijd mee opgroeide op een boerderij.

Tijdens zijn vervangende dienst bij de Novib realiseerde hij zich dat hij fotografie en reizen kon combineren en er geld mee kon verdienen. Verschillende bladen met buitenlandse onderwerpen volgden en halverwege jaren tachtig sloot hij zich aan bij het nieuwe fotobureau Hollandse Hoogte.

De eerste grote buitenland reportage maakte hij in 1985 in de Sudan tijdens de droogte en vluchtelingencrisis in Ethiopië en omringende landen. Het volgende jaar fotografeerde hij de val van dictator Ferdinand Marcos in de Filippijnen. Daarna volgden reportages over de Sovjet oorlog in Afghanistan.

Eind jaren tachtig besloot hij om zijn basis in Azië te vestigen. Eind 1989 verhuisde hij naar het toen nog Britse Hong Kong.

Vanuit die voormalige kolonie fotografeerde hij nog steeds veel in de Filippijnen maar nu ook in de rest van Zuidoost Azië (Indonesië, Thailand en Laos) en op het Chinese vaste land waar de economische groei enorm toenam.

In 1991 was hij in Bangladesh toen er een desastreuse cycloon over de kust raasde die meer dan honderddhuizend doden veroorzaakte. Zijn foto’s werden toen vooral door het Franse fotobureau Sygma over de hele wereld verkocht.

Eind jaren negentig was hij in Indonesië bij het einde van het regime van president Suharto en de grote en bloedige rellen in Jakarta.

Veel van zijn werk werd in verschillende tentoonstellingen in Hong Kong tentoongesteld. In 2007 over het verdwijnen van het traditionele leven uit het oude centrum van Hong Kong island. Een paar jaar later over hoe het er uitziet als een supertanker wordt opgeknapt in een droogdok over de grens in China. In 2013 een succesvolle serie over de Blue Bosporus in Istanbul in Turkije.

In 2002 was hij ook een van de deelnemende fotografen in de prestigieuze ‘Brandhaarden’ tentoonstelling van het Nederlands Fotomuseum in Rotterdam. Zijn bijdrage waren beelden van de oorlog in Afghanistan in de jaren tachig.

Van 2009 tot 2019 was hij lecturer op het Journalism and Media Studies Centre van de Universiteit van Hong Kong. In 2021 keerde hij voorgoed terug naar Nederland.
